Changing climate, and declining natural resources and ecosystem health are threatening the sustainability of agriculture and food security. Efforts to increase agricultural productivity and crop yields have historically degraded the environment and reduced biodiversity and ecosystem services, with the significant impact on the masses in the global south. The major challenges to sustainability of agriculture and food security, due to climatic changes, include the occurrence of un-predicted temperature fluctuations, heat waves, drought episodes, floods, and epidemics of biotic stresses, etc., The wise use of ecological approaches, like allelopathy, conservation agriculture, etc., can help reduce the impact of climate change and pest pressure on production systems, and achieving global food security while minimizing further environmental degradation. Ecological approaches for sustainable agriculture also offer ecosystem services, nutrient cycling, biodiversity conservation, pest reduction, and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Planting stress-resilient short duration crop genotypes in a conservation agriculture system (with minimum soil disturbance and soil cover with crop residue) in a well-designed diverse rotation and intercropping system is a good ecological approach for sustainable cereal-legume cropping system
