Plant tissue culture, is an efficient technology for the purpose of mass production, germplasm preservation, physiological studies and genetic transformation. Scientists in the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology use the potential of tissue culture for the development of pathogen free crops and the production of plant secondary metabolites material for extraction of drugs. Applicable protocols are being prepared for clonal propagation and mass production of ornamental plants or horticultural crops.
Currently we are optimizing the Agrobacterium tumefaciens- based transformation system by inserting reporter genes into potato, tomato, petunia and grape. After validating the transformation procedures, the system can be routinely performed for the production of transgenic plants having desirable characters.
